Tomb of Dialta Firrao

Abstract

This trecento tomb, which unusually still has some of its original painted surface largely intact, is in San Domenico in Naples. The tomb was commissioned by Ludovico Dentice to commemorate his wife, Dialta Firrao, whose effigy is sculpted in relief lying on the sarcophagus. A little paint remains on the effigy, suggesting that this part too was richly painted. On the front of the sarcophagus are sculpted and painted the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus, flanked by St. John the Baptist and St. Catherine of Alexandria, as well as coats of arms of the Firrao and Dentice delle Stelle families.
