Crucifix

Abstract

In the Chapel of the Trinity in Santa Maria in Via in Rome hangs a wooden polychrome crucifix, which the church dates to the 16th century. The sculpture appears to be slightly smaller than life-size. For this reason, it may have once been a processional crucifix and was later fixed in place in this chapel, with wall frescoes added to complete the composition.

The surface is covered with a dark patina, likely the result of age and devotional use. Painted and three-dimensionally sculpted drops of blood flow from Christ’s side wound, emerging below the loincloth. There is also painted blood that trickles down Christ’s wrists and feet.
