Crucifix

Abstract

This life-size wooden crucifix (placed in San Felice in Piazza by the Soprintendenza in 1929 and now in the Oratorio di San Sebastiano, Florence) is of debated attribution, but generally agreed to be early fifteenth-century, because of the similarity to Donatello's Santa Croce Crucifix. As in the Santa Croce Crucifix, the arms are hinged at the shoulders so that the figure of Christ can be taken down from the cross on Good Friday, in a re-enactment of the deposition and entombment of Christ.
