Working with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Creating the Optimal Intellectual, Social, and Physical Environments

Abstract

The purpose of this master’s project was to examine different issues and strategies on working with students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to create the optimal intellectual, social, and physical environments in regular, inclusive classrooms. Despite the excellent previous research and publications on students with ASD, not enough practical strategies have been focused on students with ASD in Grade 7 and 8 regular classrooms. To address this lack, I created a presentation/workshop and corresponding brochure for Grade 7 and 8 teachers who have little experience working with adolescents with ASD. These resources represent practical strategies these teachers can use. The presentation/workshop has a main focus on the physical environment, and the relation the actual classroom space can have on the academic and social environments for students with ASD. The final chapter looks back on my journey of creating this presentation/workshop to reflect on the progress that has been made for students with ASD, as well as looking forward towards the steps that still need to be taken in Ontario public schools by other teachers and myself to help ensure that all classrooms are inclusive.
