Abstract

This wooden sculpture of St. Mary Magdalene in penitence in the wilderness towards the end of her life, her hair grown miraculously long to hide her nakedness, is housed in the Museo Diocesano, Arezzo. Though the museum lists the work as early fifteenth-century, it must surely post-date Donatello's famously wasted version of the subject, now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, which it follows closely, albeit in a cruder manner.
