Abstract
This sculpture of the crucified Christ is made of mortar and wood and was made between the 14th and 15th centuries. The sculpture was originally from the church of Saint George in San Giorgio in Cicerale, a town near Salerno but is now displayed in the Museo Diocesano di Valle della Lucania. Christ’s head hangs low, indicating that he has died on the cross. Droplets of blood are painted on his biceps and forearms, and a larger spurt of blood is seen exuding from the cavity on the right side of his ribs. Some paint has been chipped off, especially on the figure’s hands. There is a fissure on the right arm, suggesting that the piece may have broken and later placed back. The statue was restored, though no date of the restoration is available. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
