Crucifix

Abstract

This sixteenth-century crucifix is located in the small chapel to the right of the sanctuary in the Minor Basilica of St. Lawrence in Lucina in Rome, which features Guido Reni's Christ on the Cross (1639–1640) painting above the high altar. The painted wooden crucifix is mounted on a wooden cross. It is possible that Christ’s body was repainted to mimic the appearance of bronze—a practice common in the nineteenth century—when the chapel was fitted for the Nataletti family. The perizoma (loincloth) is gilded, and red blood splatters from the wound on Christ’s torso reach the folds of the fabric.
