Crucifix

Abstract

This large crucifix, currently in Sant'Agostino in Rieti, was previously in the church of the orphanage for girls in the same city. It is typical of the monumental crucifixes made in the Trecento in the long, thin proportions of Christ's body, with ribs protruding and arms that seem painfully stretched upwards in a y-shape from bearing the weight of his body. The face is elevated with a serene expression, high forehead, and ornamentally carved curling beard, but the mouth falls open, revealing the teeth, which would not be decorous except in cases of extreme suffering.
