Madonna and Child (Immaculate Conception)

Abstract

This wooden relief, made for the ceiling of Sainta Maria della Grazia in Lecce, was photographed in 2019, when it was displayed at ground level in church, following restoration. It shows the Madonna and Child, with Mary standing on clouds and being crowned by two angels, and so it is traditionally thought to refer to the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The relative simplicity of the scene contrasts with the complex image of the Coronation of the Virgin on the same ceiling, which has been ascribed to the same artist.
