Abstract

This work of glazed terracotta, without relief ("pittura in maiolica," as it was called), was created using a technique devised by Luca della Robbia, which was also later described by Vasari in a passage in his biography of that the artist. Luca is known today as a sculptor, but Leonardo da Vinci praised his invention of glazed terracotta by saying that Luca had found a way to make painting eternal. This lunette, however, is attributed to Luca's nephew, Andrea della Robbia, and dates to 1488. It can be found today in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo.
