Abstract

This painted wood sculpture from the first half of the duecento was brought from the Spedale di Santa Chiara to its current location, the Museo di San Matteo in Pisa. No attributes clarify which bishop saint this is. The strict iconic symmetry of the figure, typical of works from this period, is only relieved by a slight variation in the folds of his clothing (which does not reveal the body underneath) and the varying heights of his upraised arms.
