Abstract

Giacomo Genovivi's sculpture of Christ at the moment of the Flagellation is located in the last chapel on the left of the central nave of the Cathedral of Martina Franca. The sculpture, made in 1622 out of the trunk of an olive tree, was originally placed in the old Cathedral of San Martino before it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1743. Genovivi's take on the Flagellation of Christ shows him bent over, his hands tied behind his back. A large whip mark is noticeable across the right shoulder. An intriguing expression on Christ's downturned face shows him glancing up at his captors. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
