Abstract

Giuseppe Zimbalo's statue of St. Irene, placed across from the statue of St. Veneranda, is located on a shelf on the right wall by the altar of St. Fortunatus in the Cathedral of Lecce. St. Irene was the patron saint of Lecce until she was replaced by St.Oronzo in 1656. She is portrayed quite similarly to St. Veneranda, with gold-gilded robes and hair. The statue is in good condition with the exception of the missing left hand. This chapel was erected in 1674 to thank Fortunatus for his protection from the plague.
