Abstract
Made around 1600, the wood sculpture of Saint Anthony the Abbot was originally from the region of Lucania. Saint Anthony was known as the protector against shingles and was invoked whenever someone was afflicted by the disease. The effigy holds a book while gazing out at the viewer. He wears a beige floral outfit, which is adorned with a black mantle. The back of the figure is hollowed out, indicating that it may have been placed in a niche. The sculpture is in poor condition; the wood, particularly towards the bottom of his attire, is damaged. The paint has also chipped off in certain places, revealing the bare wood. It is now located in the Museo Diocesano Teggiano. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
