Tomb of Pietro da Noceto

Abstract

The tomb of Pietro Noceto is housed in the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca and was made between 1468 and 1472. This marble monument has traces of gilding and polychromy, and red marble panels add to the rich effect. Since the eyes are flat (with no carving indicating the irises or pupils), these must have been painted too, along with other details. This tomb is modelled on those of Leonardo Bruni and Carlo Marsuppini in Florence, which technical examination shows were originally painted red, green, blue, and other colours.
