Abstract

This bust, likely created between the 16th and 17th centuries, represents Queen Sancha of Majorca. In 1304, she married King Robert the Wise of Anjou following the death of his first wife, Yolanda of Aragon. Renowned for her deep piety, Sancha entered religious life in 1344, founding the monastery of Santa Croce. Sancha was also responsible for constructing the Church of Santa Chiara with her husband. The sculpture today shows signs of wear: the figure’s right hand is missing, and the surface bears damage from handling and the activity of wood-boring insects.
