Madonna del Suffragio

Abstract

These eighteenth-century painted wood sculptures show the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus, and down below, half-length figures of souls suffering in the flames of Purgatory, who are hoping for salvation from the Madonna. Mary and Jesus have been dressed in actual fabric clothing, and been given metal crowns (20th century) and a silver ewer (19th C).
