| dc.description.abstract | This sculpture of St. John the Baptist originated from the Materan school in the 1500s and was at one point placed on the high altar of the same church. St. John takes a naturalistic stance, his weight shifted into his left side and his right leg bent and protruding forward. His mouth is open, giving the impression that he was caught in the act of speaking. With his right hand, he points to the gospel in his left hand. The polychromy is damaged in some areas, but his distinctive animal skin robe is still clearly visible underneath the red cloak.
