Crucifix

Abstract

This crucifix in Sant'Agostino in Orte has been compared to the works of the painter Bernardino Campilio, whose father was a woodcarver, and therefore plausibly Campilio may have made works in sculpture as well. At any rate, it attests to connections between the art of northern Lazio and southern Umbria. The figure is muscular, with raised veins (perhaps created by placing strings in the gesso that covers the wooden substrate, before painting the flesh tones, and three dimensional torrents of blood, probably modelled in the gesso, especially coming from the wound in the side. The mouth is open with visible teeth and tongue. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
