Tomb of Mariano d'Alagno and Caterina Orsi

Abstract

The tomb of Mariano d'Alagno and Caterina Orsi is on the right wall of the Cappellone in San Domenico in Naples. This was a particularly prestigious chapel in the period, as a miraculous painting was kept here -- purportedly the crucifix that spoke to St. Thomas Aquinas! (Now the miraculous image has been replaced by a copy.) A Madonna and Child are flanked by angels in the arch, and Mariano is sculpted in the round, lying atop the arcophagus, whereas his wife is sculpted in relief on the front of the sarcophagus. Some gilding survives on the surface of the marble tomb. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License
