Tomb of Tommaso Nauclerio

Abstract

The funerary monument of Tommaso Nauclerio is located in the Nauclerio Chapel of the church of Sant’Anna dei Lombardi in Naples, formerly known as Santa Maria di Monteoliveto. Tommaso Nauclerio was a nobleman whose family maintained close ties with the Aragonese royal dynasty. The tomb was created by the d’Aurio workshop, possibly including the Neapolitan sculptor Domenico d’Aurio and his son Girolamo. Domenico himself was a pupil of Giovanni da Nola, one of the leading sculptors in Naples during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Above the tomb, a half-length image of the Virgin and Child appears against a painted backdrop, flanked by graceful angels.
