Crucifix

Abstract

This crucifix in the Sacristy of the Cathedral of Viterbo, now a part of the Museo del Colle del Duomo, was made in the 17th C out of papier mâché, a light and strong material, useful for an object to be carried and moved in sacred rituals. Wooden joints were added to the arms and the head, so that the figure could be moved during ritual reenactments of the Crucifixion and Deposition on Good Friday, taken down from the Cross, and touched, mourned, and placed in a symbolic sepulcher.
