St. Roche

Abstract

This painted wood statue in Santa Maria del Popolo in Cittaducale was made in the seventeenth century, according to church signage. St. Roche is shown here with the typical attributes of the dog who brings him bread and his pilgrim's staff and garb, including a cape ornamented with shells. Roche raises his skirt to point to a plague sore on his leg. Images of St. Roche are common, as he was thought to help in times of plague and is also the patron saint to foreigners.
