Abstract

This 17th-century wooden statue of St. Eligius in the Museo del Cattedrale in Matera was originally located in the Church of Madonna del Carmine in Matera. St. Eligius is shown in sumptuous gold robes and a gold bishop's hat, referencing his role as the patron saint of goldsmiths and metalworkers. The top of his staff appears to be missing, as are the fingers from his right hand. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
