Saint John the Evangelist

Abstract

This sculpture depicts Saint John the Evangelist and is located in the museum of Santa Chiara in Naples. It was created by Giovanni Bertini, a Florentine sculptor who was active in Naples in the second half of the 14th century. Giovanni worked alongside his brother, Pacio, in the city, producing many marble monuments and wooden sculptures under Angevin patronage. The sculpture is not in good condition: the surface is damaged due to wood-burrowing insects, paint has chipped off, and the figure’s right arm is broken off.
