Pietà

Abstract

The lunette above the main door of the Chiesa della Pieta in Teggiano contains a sculpted relief of the Pietà. The relief is attributed to Neapolitan sculptor, Francesco da Sicignano. Mary supports her dead son on her knees while holding his head with her left hand. She gazes down at him in sorrow; her brows furrow and her mouth curves downward, indicating that she is grief-stricken. The sculpture is not well-preserved. Most of the polychromy has been chipped off and scratch marks appear on Christ’s body. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
