Saint Rosa of Viterbo

Abstract

Saint Rosa was born in 1234 in Viterbo, a city in Lazio, which had once been a part of the Papal state. According to Andrea Andreucci, a priest who wrote about the saint’s life, Rosa was devoted to God at a young age and accompanied her mother to church. At the age of three, she performed her first miracle; after praying to the Lord, she brought her recently deceased aunt back to life. The young saint had performed other miracles throughout her life and died in 1251. Here, Rosa is seen wearing a black nun's habit, holding a cross in her left hand. Behind her right hand is a book, which may have been added later. A cord wraps around the figure. The sculpture has suffered some damage, especially on the edges of the drapery of her dress. Her eyes seem to be made of glass. The sculpture is located in the Museo d’Arte Sacra Don Clemente Confalone, Maiori, Campania.
