Coffered Ceiling

Abstract

The polychrome coffered ceiling in Sant’Agnese Fuori le Mura in Rome was commissioned by Pope Paul V (reigned 1605–1621). At the centre is a sculpted figure of Saint Agnes with a lamb and a palm of martyrdom, flanked by effigies of Saints Cecilia with an organ and Catherine of Siena holding lilies, symbols of purity and chastity. The ceiling has been restored and regilded.
