Altarpiece of St. Anthony

Abstract

The second last chapel on the left of the central nave of San Pietro Caveoso in Matera is the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua. Made in 1531, the six painted stone relief panels have been tentatively attributed to Altobello Persio. Persio's Annunciation and De Simone Altarpiece, both located in the nearby Cathedral of Matera, are comparable works in both material and scale, and were completed around the same time. At the top of the arch is a figure of God the Father giving his blessing. The reliefs, carved out of local tufa and painted, depict scenes from St. Anthony's life. A modern creche scene obstructed views of the work in July of 2019, when these photographs were taken. Photograph(s) licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
