Reformation and Revolution Leading into the Modern Era

Abstract

This series of lessons serves to educate Grade 12 students about the variety of revolutions and reformations that occurred between 1789-1900 around the world which have served to shape the modern era. To do this the lessons focus on the French Revolution, The American Civil War, and the Great Reforms of Tzar Alexander II. Lesson 1 in the set introduces students to this concept of revolution by introducing them to the French Revolution and providing a relatively thorough briefing on its historical significance. Lesson 2 builds on this knowledge and takes a more nuanced approach to understanding this revolution by examining the people directly involved and their individual perspectives. Lesson 3 turns towards Russia and the actions of Tzar Alexander II as he attempted to reform Russia and the consequences that resulted due to his actions. Finally, lesson four transports students across the ocean where students once again learn about a violent conflict within a country’s own borders as they examine the continuity and change brought about by the American Civil War. Between these four lessons and the plentiful amount of primary sources contained within them students will become well versed in the Historical Thinking through the lens of The Big Six Historical Thinking Concepts.
